If you want to own one of the greenest cars to date, the car should not just have a great fuel economy, but every component of the vehicle should be recyclable or biodegradable. The common question we hear from greater City of Industry drivers is: how is it even possible to produce green floor mats and tires? Well, luckily Mitsubishi knows exactly how!
In an effort to lessen CO2 emissions while using fossil fuels, the Japanese automaker is on a journey to diminish the carbon footprint of cars like Mitsubishi Lancer. The automaker is in the process of creating environmentally friendly materials, known as "Green Plastics."
Fibers are formed from plant based resin using sugarcane molasses, then wrapped in regular petroleum-based polypropylene sheaths, which allow it to meet performance demanded. Upcoming Mitsubishi vehicles will be the first to have green floor mats.
"Mitsubishi Motors?has developed a new floor mat made using plant-based bio-polyethylene (bio-PE) fibre to add to its lineup of proprietary plant-based "Green Plastic" products. The company plans to start production of the new floor mats in the summer of 2012," the auto maker's official statement reads.1
