The city of Irvine is one with more recent origins, in the grand scheme of US cities. The land that would later become Irvine was initially purchased in 1864 by James Irvine I, an Irish immigrant who had recently established Irvine & Co. and the Irvine Company, a real estate development company. Irvine purchased this land along with his partners in a sheep-raising business venture. The sheep herding ranch they purchased (previously named Rancho San Joaquin) was bought out by Irvine from his partners in 1878 and was later passed to his son, James Irvine II, upon the elder Irvine’s death in 1886.
James Irvine II began converting much of the ranching land into fields for growing olives and citrus. During his tenure at the head of his father’s real estate company, the Santa Fe Railroads was extended through this area, with a station in this area named for James Irvine. The town that was eventually established around this station was initially named Myford (after Irvine II’s son), but was later renamed Irvine in 1914.
In 1959, the Irvine Company sold a portion of land to the University of California for a new campus, while also drawing up plans for a new city surrounding the campus. The resulting industrial and residential city was known as Irvine, while the farming land upon which the town originated was renamed East Irvine. By the end of 1971, the city of Irvine was officially incorporated into California.
Today, the city of Irvine exists as a booming college town and is home to a variety of campuses, including the University of California Irvine, Concordia University, and the Orange County Center of USC. Many corporate buildings are also located within this city, including videogame developers Blizzard Entertainment and Golden State Foods.
